REMEMBER: SAMUEL HARGRESS JR IN THE TIMES
Harlem Bespoke: We reported that Paris Blue's owner Samuel Hargress Jr had passed away earlier in the month and the New York Times now has an obituary up celebrating the life of the Harlem legend. The jazz lounge that has been around on 7th Avenue at the corner of 121st Street since the late 60s has been a Harlem institution where everyone was welcome. Food would be out for visitors to enjoy and regulars had birthday parties celebrated at the local establishment. In more recent years, the uptown address would eventually attract an international following of tourists.
Mr. Hargress was as reverend's son from Alabama originally and surprisingly never smoke or drank. The savvy businesses man also purchased the entire building of his bar for a reported $38K several decades ago and thus has guaranteed the longevity of his business while other like Lenox Lounge succumbed to the pressures of over development of the neighborhood. His two sons plan to keep Paris Blues running for future generations: LINK
