REMEMBER: RICHMOND BARTHE

Harlem Bespoke: Richmond Barthe is probaly one of the lesser known Harlem Renaissance luminaries and we starting doing some research on the artist after seeing his banner recently posted up over West 125th Street.  The southern boy born in Mississipi in 1901 would eventually be trained to become sculptor at the Art Institute of Chicago after being barred from other art schools because most of the educational institution were integrated at the time.  As one of the first artists to create modern black figurative art in the 20th Century, the young man's work would then become quite popular in the coming decades.  This eventually lead to opportunites  New York City for a period of time from the late 20s until the 40s but Mr. Barthe would move all over the world later in life.  Those interested can check out the short film clip from 1939 that shows the artist at work in his studio: LINK
