REMEMBER: GARAGE BROWNSTONES ON 126TH STREET

Harlem Bespoke: An affordable housing building has topped off at the formerly empty parcel of land just east of Frederick Douglass Boulevard on 126th Street and we wondered what was on the site previously.  There had been an overgrown plot for as long as we can remember and old city tax photos from the 1940s reveal that it used to have a row of brownstones with storefront additions used for garage or commercial space.

There was a also a small tenement building that apparently was part of this lot that had been empty for decades until now. A couple of those aforementioned brownstones still stand right next door and are currently used by a local church.  Check out our previous post for a view of the block before construction and more on that new building at 265 West 126th Street: LINK
