THE MYSTERY BUILDING AT 13 HAMILTON TERRACE

Harlem Bespoke: Hamilton Terrace is one of the landmark micro-neighborhoods found in Harlem but some might wonder what is going on with the more mid century looking apartment complex towards the south end of the street.  Our initial though is that a mysterious row of brownstones were probably at this location but somehow did not get restored before the neighborhood had landmark protection after the 1970s or so.  An archival city photo form the early 1940s show that there actually was an empty lot on site for many decades beforehand and it is unclear if anything stood here at all in the previous century.  Does anyone out there have any additional information on this unusual situation?

  1. That's the Ivey Delph Apartments, designed by Vertner Woodson Tandy, the first Black registered architect in New York State. The building opened in 1951 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The National Park Service has the story: https://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/afam/2005/ivey.htm
