DOES EAST 125TH STREET NEED MORE OFFICE SPACE?

Harlem Bespoke:  East 125th Street has been slowly demolished to make way for development with mixed results in the past few decades but will new office spaces make a difference?  We noticed an ad for the massive office development planned for the demolished Pathmark lot by the Lexington Avenue and wondered if everything will be more transformative when things finish up in the not so distant future.

The former Pathmark building that took up the entire block really just was not that great since the monolithic nature of the storefront was neither inviting or engaging to the neighborhood.  There will be a supermarket on the ground floor of the newer construction but at least now the glass frontage surrounds the entire lower level which is more appealing for the average passerby.  We also prefer the larger windows on the upper floors and the warm brick over the cold concrete walls of the previous supermarket design.

As far as subway stops go, this location should be one of the best on the boulevard east of Fifth Avenue since the Lex Line entrance is literally right there at the corner.  There is a lot of talk recently about offices actually being obsolete but some jobs actually do require people to show up to review things physically and engage collectively to be efficient.  If one of those businesses eventually materialize, that would mean more foot traffic in the area and eventually more life to this desolate part of the neighborhood.  Check out what the site currently looks like in our past post: LINK
