REMEMBER: MISSING HANDRAILS ON WEST 136TH
Halem Bespoke: We always wondered about these mystery stair rails on West 136th Street by Frederick Douglass Boulevard since none of the brownstones on the block have matching cast ironwork. So we did some research and an archival photo from the 1940s has a surprising reveal. It turns out that the original design did not have any rails at all but the tubular architectural details on the stoop originally served this purpose in themselves. Could this have been just a miscalculation in the height of the structures? Everything is a bit too low to grab on to so therefore homeowners have added the metal rails over the years from the look of things.
