Harlem Bespoke: The Mount Morris Park Historic District was one of the first neighborhoods uptown to be made an official landmark back in 1971 because the brownstone blocks in Harlem were obviously one of the most majestic to be found in Manhattan. Seven years ago, the notable district almost doubled in size and so some might be interested in seeing where the modern borders are located.
Mount Morris Park Historic District and extension is in an area just below 125th Street within the blocks spanning Lenox Avenue from 118th Street to 124th Street. Adam Clayton Poweel/7th Avenue is the west border and Mount Morris Park West is the main east border. Many uptowners call Harlem a village and the Mount Morris Park Historic District is the one micro-nabe that really captures this spirit. The city's Landmark Commission also agreed in 2015 and doubled the size of the majestic neighborhood which also includes many brownstone storefronts on the Lenox Avenue corridor. Townhouses also tend to be on the larger side on these intact blocks which have attracted home buyers such as celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson and art world gallery legend Gavin Brown. Another big attraction is that the main transportation hub of express subway lines on 125th Street will get one to midtown in less than 15 minutes.
As far as home sales go,
Maya Angelou's brownstone sold for just over $4 million in 2016 and 208 Lenox had a record closing set at
$4.59 million a couple of years later. Whole Foods finally opened 125th Street and Lenox
back in 2017 which helped push the Mount Morris Park Historic District to the top of the list.
