It is the artist’s first show with the gallery. Comprised of new paintings, the exhibition features a series of nocturnal landscapes exploring ancestry and colonial histories in Bermuda, the homeland of the artist’s father, and the Hudson Valley, where the artist’s studio is based. REVIVE: CONSTRUCTION AT GAVIN BROWN

We walked by the industrial area of Manhattanville by the Mink Building last week and noticed quite a few construction workers within one to the street level storefronts adding on drywall to the interior.  A passerby mentioned that this would be the Gavin Brown gallery in Harlem which made some headlines several months ago.  This block on 126th Street just east of Amsterdam has been slowly over the past decade changing into what might just one day be the next West Chelsea and the arrival of the famous Gavin Brown gallery could be the game changer.  For those who are not in the art world, this move by the iconic downtown establishment is basically akin to Barney's moving uptown for retail.  Mr. Brown has been a Harlem resident for several years and with downtown retail spaces now being too expensive for even the bigger names in the art world, it only makes sense to head further up north.  More on Gavin Brown's move to Harlem can be found in our past post: LINK

SEE: LATOYA RUBY FRAZIER AT GAVIN BROWN

Sunday, January 14th, 2:00PM-6:00PM, LaToya Ruby Frazier Exhibit Opening Reception at Gavin Brown Galleries, 439 West 127th Street by Amsterdam Avenue.  On January 14, Gavin Brown’s enterprise will open its debut solo exhibition by the artist and photographer, LaToya Ruby Frazier, her largest exhibition in New York to date. A recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2015, LaToya Ruby Frazier’s artistic practice spans a range of media that incorporates photography, video and performance and centers on the nexus of social justice, cultural change and commentary on the American experience. This exhibition features three distinct recent bodies of work: Flint is Family, The Notion of Family, and A Pilgrimage to Noah Purifoy's Desert Art Museum whose themes address Frazier's deeply rooted and long held concerns exploring the legacies of racism, inequality, economic decline, access to healthcare and environmental justice.   More details on the Gavin Brown Gallery site: LINK

LAST CHANCE: AGHDRA AT GAVIN BROWN 2021

Extended through December 19th, 2021, AGHDRA by Arthur Jafa Exhibit at Gavin Brown Galleries, 439 West 127th Street by Amsterdam Avenue, Wednesdays-Sundays, 12:00PM-8:00PM.  The Harlem location of Gavin Brown in Manhattanville shuttered last summer but one final show has made it on the radar for the end of 2021.  AGHDRA by Arthur Jafa needed the big interior of the old brewery building for the massive moving images on a stubstantial movie screen and fortunately the gallery still was on the lease.

Jannis Kounellis exhibition at Gavin Brown Galleries, 439 West 127th Street by Amsterdam Avenue.   On November 4, Gavin Brown’s enterprise will open a solo exhibition by Jannis Kounellis. The exhibition features historic works, alongside works from the last few years of the artist's life. Born in Greece and arriving in Rome at age 20, Kounellis can be seen as a stand-in for European trauma – a man in exile wandering the world in the aftermath of war. Kounellis rejected the notion of a post-war society. To him, war and its trauma linger in the social psyche indefinitely. REMEMBER: GAVIN BROWN'S ENTERPRISE

Harlem Bespoke: The uptown art world has now lost one of its major new galleries when Gavin Brown's Enterprise on West 127th Street announced that the location will permanently be closing last month.  Mr. Brown established notable art spaces downtown over 26 years ago and rebelliously opened a grand 4-story exhibition center inside an old brewery building within Harlem's old manufacturing district back in 2016.  Since the gallerist also has restored and lives in one of the historic brownstones of the neighborhood, bringing the art world uptown perfectly made sense.  That was until the pandemic shut everything down.

INTRODUCING: RIRKRIT TIRAVANIJA AT GAVIN BROWN

Opening Sunday, September 16th, 4:00PM-8:00PM, Rirkrit Tiravanija Exhibit at Gavin Brown Gallery, 439 West 127th Street by Amsterdam Avenue. Works by Rirkrit Tiravanija at Gavin Brown's Manhattaville gallery location will be the first exhibit to be shown for this fall at the famous art space located in an industrial brewery building.  The contemporary show will also feature artist Leilah Weinraub and Rob Pruitt.
