REMEMBER: A HARLEM ICON ON 136TH STREET

A Bespoke reader sent in the above photo of a mural that was painted on the plywood up by Edgecombe and 136th Street.  Who can guess the name of this iconic Harlem athlete who was popular circa 1937?  The boxing gloves are also a major clue here so anyone who has a bit of sports history knowledge should be able to get this one easily.  We originally thought this was poster but the work by SCOUT is actually painted directly on to the wood fence.

  1. Of course its the brown bomber himself Joe Louis. The 1937 gives it away

  2. Unfortunately it wasn't painted on the shed, it was in a separate piece, screwed in - and it's already gone :(
