A Bespoke reader mentioned that they will be moving from Chelsea into a brownstone on West Harlem's 145th Street and wondered what were the best options for eateries in the neighborhood. The Grange at Amsterdam and 141st Street just opened but will not be serving food until next week or so and these guys already know about The Chipped Cup at 148th and Broadway as far as coffee shops go.
We would then recommend Harlem Public at 149th and Amsterdam for Sunday brunch or a gastropub type dinner outing during the week. We have not been to Coccola on Amsterdam and 139th but hear good things about the Italian spot. These are the places really comparable to downtown establishments and there is not much else that we would rave about until Il Caffe Latte opens on 145th Street.
With that said there are many affordable establishments in the neighborhood that are more hole in the walls but we usually don't go out to eat much unless the ambiance of the restaurants have a certain warm quality to them. Honorable mention includes Famous Fish Market at 145th by St. Nicholas and Mama K's soups on Sugar Hill.
Finally, there are the express trains on 145th Street which are within a 5 minute walk of one another and it is only one stop to 125th Street to the restaurant rows of Lenox Avenue or Frederick Douglass Boulevard.
there's Cocola on Amsterdam 2 blocks down from the Harlem Grange. And for a coffee shop, there's still the place on 140th and Amsterdam (One Stop?). And don't forget Tante Dulce down on Broadway 140-141st. They're still the best bet for a very inexpensive but really good meal, and they do delivery.
ReplyDeleteSome folks like Tonalli or Truffa also which are on Broadway
ReplyDeleteAlso not far away are the Hudson River Cafe and Covo. Plus there is a wine/tapas bar opening at 147th/Amsterdam called Amsterdam Social (I believe). I read about it here on Bespoke.
ReplyDeleteTonalli is great - don't forget about that one.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Trufa at 140th and Broadway? Great, fantastic food, and reasonable. Our favorite spot.
ReplyDeleteAlso Tian at River Bank State Park
