ART: JORDAN CASTEEL'S HARLEM

Harlem Bespoke: Local uptown artist Jordan Casteel received some mainstream fame this past fall by being the first black female painter to have cover art for the coveted Vogue September issue but a major solo exhibit at downtown's New Museum is probably a more important milestone.  We got online tickets that were timed by the hour to see the show which feature a mesmerizing amount of work by the Harlem resident who frequently uses the community as an inspiration for the dramatic figurative work.

The folks at Benyam ethiopian at Frederick Douglass by 148th can be seen at the bar within the eatery. A casual pose captured on Lenox has the corner of 127th Street recognizable with Lenox Saphire in view within the background.  Then there are the guys from Pompette wine shop at 131st Street who are among the many familiar faces of the neighborhood represented.

We especially enjoyed this day of art on the Lower East Side because the museum was really great with all the social distance protocol.  Limited amount of visitors were allowed in the building only at certain times and hand sanitizer was abundant throughout.  To get tickets and reserve a time for viewing, just book everything online at the New Museum site: LINK
