SHOP: FIRST LOOK AT FOOD BAZAAR ON 125TH STREET

Harlem Bespoke: The loss of the East Harlem Pathmark was a big blow to 125th Street by Lexington Avenue but something much bigger and better has debuted as of last week just a block east at the corner of 3rd Avenue.  Food Bazaar might just have the largest single floor supermarket space in all of Harlem and the vibe is comparable to the now defunct Fairway that was on the west side but with more rustic decor.

DWELL: 1700 LEXINGTON AVENUE TOWNHOUSE

Harlem Bespoke: The 5-unit rental brownstone at 1700 Lexington Avenue was off the market earlier last year but returned months later for the same asking price set at $2.6 million $2.4 million.  As previously mentioned, this is probably one of the best locations in East Harlem because of the proximity to the 103rd Street subway stop but the painted townhouse is chopped up into many units which may or may not have tenants currently residing within.

REOPENING: TALLER BORICUA GALLERY

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12:00PM-6:00PM, Gallery Viewings at Taller Boricua Gallery, 1680 Lexington Avenue, between East 105th and East 106th streets.  Uptown's arts organization are cautiously getting back to normal and now one East Harlem cultural institution has opened doors once more.  The Taller Boricua gallery in El Barrio is located within a landmark school building and currently has an exhibit on the history of the famous institution.  Temporal Chronology is a historical visual illustration of Taller Boricua’s lifelong storyline continuum. THE SPIRIT OF EAST HARLEM MURAL DETERIORATING

Harlem Bespoke:  We followed up on the story of the restoration of the Eva Cockcroft mural in Hamilton Heights this week and was surprised to see that an even more famous public work of uptown art has not received similar treatment.  Hank Prussing painted The Spirit of East Harlem back in 1973 on the side of building at East 104th Street and Lexington but now the iconic mural appears to be deteriorating badly.  

The top photo was taken 10 years ago and the lower ones this week.  Apparently there was some brick repair recently so a portion of the painting has totally been removed in certain areas.  Remaining paint on the facade has also faded drastically in the past decade and it does not appear that the work of art will survive to see another unless something is done.  See more before photos from in our past post: LINK

DRINK: THE PERCH BAR OPENS ON LEXINGTON

Harlem Bespoke: The Lexington Avenue commercial corridor in East Harlem has a new 1920s style bar that is quite the knockout.  Somehow the owners of East Harlem Bottling Co. were able to renovate a space a block south at 107th Street in the past year and managed to fabricate a stunning wood frame facade with a dramatic arched window.  Those same arches with a Deco vibe are repeated within and now locals can have a drink of crafted cocktails from Wednesdays through Sundays each week during evening hours. SEE: VIRTUAL TALLER BORICUA GALLERY IN EL BARRIO

Women on the Edge of Time virtural exhibit at Taller Boricua Gallery, 1680 Lexington Avenue, between East 105th and East 106th streets.  Uptown's arts organization are cautiously getting back to normal but some have kept things virtual indefinitely.  The Taller Boricua gallery in El Barrio has not opened yet for 2021 yet but an online gallery now features art by member of NYSWA which is the New York Society of Women Artists.  Works by 36 artists from this 100 year old organization are currently up at the official website and can be viewed in a socially distant fashion at home.  More information and the full exhibit can be found on the Taller Boricua site: LINK
