WILL TRADER JOE'S HARLEM OPEN IN 2023?

Harlem Bespoke: The National Urban League building on 125th Street by Lenox Avenue has all the glassed windows in place so many might be wondering when Trader Joe's will be open as an anchor commercial tenant.

Harlem Bespoke: We have another update for those waiting for the Trader Joe's in Harlem to open at the National Urban League building on 125th Street by Lenox Avenue!  The above photos were taken over the weekend and so now the full facade has been glassed.  The larger windows on the street level started going up in July and now things have finished up out front which is a major milestone.

NUL & TRADER JOE’S HARLEM BUILDING TOPS OFF

Harlem Bespoke:  We checked on the rising National Urban League building and the future location of the Harlem Trader Joe's at 121 West 125th Street again this week and it looks like the future home of everyone's favorite discount supermarket and also Harlem's first Civil Rights Museum had just made a major construction milestone.

Harlem Bespoke:  We have not taken a photo of 121 West 125th Street since the foundation completed work earlier this past summer but now things are really picking up at the future site of Harlem's first Civil Rights Museum and the long-awaited Trader Joe's supermarket.

QUESTION: WHEN WILL TRADER JOE'S HARLEM OPEN?

Harlem Bespoke: A lot of uptowners were excited this past January when it was announced that Trader Joe's would be arriving on 125th Street but when will the opening day be?  The big issue here is that the wildly popular discount supermarket will be the anchor tenant at 121 West 125th Street which is a new development that has not been built yet.  Earlier in the year, the former parking lot building just west of Lenox Avenue was being demolished and construction on the foundation was in full swing by late springtime.  We took the above photos this week and noticed that the first floor is starting to rise and that means construction will really be speeding up in the coming months.  With all that said, the poster on the plywood makes it clear that if all goes to plan, July 2023 in two year will be the earliest finish date.  More on Trader Joe's can be found in our past post: LINK

SHOP: HARLEM LIDL ARRIVING IN 2021

Harlem Bespoke: Best Market on Frederick Douglass Boulevard by 118th Street is officially in the process of closing as of this past weekend to make way for Lidl which is the notable mega discount supermarket.   We took the above photos this morning which reveal a lot of information but does not list actually dates.

INTRODUCING: TRADER JOE'S ARRIVING IN HARLEM

Harlem Bespoke:  Trader Joe's has officially signed a lease at 121 West 125th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and Lenox Avenue.  The New York Post just announced the news that the site for the new 17-story Urban League tower will have the much coveted affordable supermarket as an anchor tenant along with a Target store.  The last photo above shows the demolition site where the old garage building is currently being torn down to make way for the new construction which is quite interestingly across the street from Whole Foods located just a couple of doors east at the corner of Lenox.  

For some reason Trader Joe's likes to stalk Whole Foods when it comes to Manhattan locations so this was pretty much inevitable.  Affordable housing will also be a part of the new construction so hopefully the city can expeditiously make things happen.  Check out our past post for a rendering of this new building that will also have a civil rights museum when all finishes up in 2023 if everything goes according to plan: LINK
